Committee Descriptions

Committee service is among the benefits that members of the Tenth J.D Bar and WCBA are offered. Many members report that it is their favorite way to meet new people, network with colleagues and expand their involvement in the community. Although each committee is different, most meet between 2-4 times per year. If you are looking for a great way to become involved in your Bar, committee service may be perfect for you. Below are options for joint Tenth J.D. Bar/WCBA committees, Tenth-only committees and WCBA-only committees.

Athletics Committee directs the basketball league, softball league, annual golf tournament and annual tennis tournament. Does not meet regularly, most work is done for each league or tournament. WCBA

Bar Awards Committee executes the annual Wake Bar Awards variety show and silent auction held each fall. This event is the largest fundraiser for Legal Aid put on by the Wake County Bar Association. WCBA

Bar Candidate Interview Committee coordinates with local firms to interview candidates taking the North Carolina Bar Exam. Tenth

Bench-Bar Committee serves as a liaison between the Bar and members of our judiciary in Wake County. Meets 1-2 times per year. Joint Tenth/WCBA

By-Laws Committee recommends changes and updates of the by-laws to the Board of Directors and membership. Meets 1-2 times per year. Joint Tenth/WCBA

CLE Committee coordinates and plans local Bar CLE programs. Meets quarterly and holds more than 40 hours of CLE for members per year. WCBA

Communications/Technology Committee oversees all things communications, from the publishing of the quarterly Wake Bar Flyer to website content and social media. The committee explores available technology that will enable the bar and the justice system to work more efficiently and effectively for the profession and the public. Meets between 2-4 times per year. Experience or passion for writing, photography, social media and graphic design are helpful but not a requirement to join. Joint Tenth/WCBA

Endowment Committee (WCBA Foundation) Board appointed committee of leaders determining the direction of the Foundation and its resources. WCBA

Endowment Scholarship Award Committee (WCBA Foundation) oversees the selection of the winners of annual memorial scholarships. Meets 1 time per year to select scholarship recipients. WCBA 

Finance Committee oversees the budget and fiduciary responsibility of the Tenth J.D. Bar and WCBA. Joint Tenth/WCBA

Grievance Committee  investigates complaints against members of the Tenth Judicial District Bar and makes  recommendations of whether probable cause exists for finding a violation of the Rules of Professional Conduct. Meets monthly at 7:30 a.m. on a Friday. (Must be licensed in NC for 5 years to serve on this committee.) Tenth

History Committee collects and organizes records and other items that pertain to the history of the Wake County Bar Association. Meets 1-2 times per year. WCBA

Lawyer Support Committee utilizes the Tenth J.D. Bar and WCBA networks to provide assistance to lawyers in need. In addition to the committee’s outreach efforts, they work to promote programs such as BarCARES and Raising our Bar. BarCARES is a cost-free program that provides confidential and professional support to all members of the Tenth, as well as immediate family members of the WCBA. Raising our Bar is a program that seeks to support the members of the local legal community in tangible ways without soliciting funds. Leadership Development Committee strives to create an inclusive and diverse environment within the WCBA and the 10th Judicial District Bar. The Leadership Development Committee is committed to diversity by fostering awareness, understanding, and appreciation of diverse individuals, and by encouraging the WCBA and Tenth J.D. Bar to nominate, appoint and retain members who come from diverse backgrounds. WCBA  

Membership Services Committee from time to time surveys the membership and makes recommendations to the Board as to additional services that would benefit its members. Meets 4 times per year. WCBA

Memorials Committee is responsible for a semi-annual program where deceased members of the Bar are memorialized. Meets 2 times per year to plan and organize the April and October memorial services. Tenth

Nominations Committee is led by the immediate-past president and selects potential leaders for the Tenth J.D. Bar and WCBA. Joint Tenth/WCBA

Professionalism Award Committee oversees the selection of the annual recipient of the Joseph P. Branch Professionalism Award, the highest honor given by the WCBA. WCBA

Professionalism Committee  is charged with exploring ways to promote professionalism among attorneys. Joint Tenth/WCBA

Public Service Committee coordinates community projects that Wake County Bar members can participate in as a group. Meets 4-6 times per year. WCBA 

Social Committee is traditionally one of the most active in the Wake County Bar Association, plans the Holiday Party, Fall Social, Family Picnic, After-work Socials and other social functions throughout the year. Meets 3-4 times per year, generally before each social. WCBA

Sponsorship Committee finds firms and legal-related companies with an interest in supporting the work of the WCBA for annual sponsorship opportunities. WCBA

Strategic Planning Committee works with leaders and staff to set the multi-year strategy and goals for the Tenth and WCBA. Joint Tenth/WCBA

Swearing-In Ceremony Committee coordinates the semi-annual swearing-in ceremonies for new attorneys who have passed the bar exam as well as coordinating a Supreme Court swearing-in in Washington, DC every few years. Meets 3-4 times per year to plan ceremonies. Joint Tenth/WCBA
