The award, which was first granted in 1991, is given to a Wake County lawyer with at least 25 years experience who exemplifies the qualities of professionalism stated in the professionalism creed and is the highest honor bestowed by the WCBA. Criminal Record Expungement Clinic to be held Saturday, February 10

WHAT:   The Wake County District Attorney’s Office, in conjunction with the Wake County Bar Association/Tenth Judicial District Bar, Legal Aid of North Carolina, and multiple Wake County agencies, will be holding an expungement clinic for individuals who have been pre-determined as eligible to have their criminal records expunged. Several Wake County attorneys and judges will be providing pro bono services to assist clients with the expungement process.

WHY: In November 2017, individuals that attended the Finding Success Re-entry Fair were able to begin the process of exploring if their past criminal offenses were eligible to be expunged from their records. Multiple agencies pooled resources to walk over 100 individuals through the process of expungement- the North Carolina Justice Center provided expunction information; the Wake County District Attorney’s office pulled their records; Legal Aid of North Carolina screened every record for eligibility; and member attorneys of the Wake County Bar Association and Tenth Judicial District Bar provided pro bono legal services. 50 eligible candidates were informed and will finalize their expungements on Saturday, February 10 with the Wake County Clerk of Court and several Wake County District Court judges.

NOTE:  To protect the identities of clients having their records expunged, no names or identifying photography of individual clients will be allowed. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman, Wake County District Court Judge Ashleigh Parker Dunston, and Blanchard Community Law Clinic Director Ashley Campbell will be available for interviews.
