Attorneys Needed to Help Veterans…and Earn Free CLE
The Wake County Clerk’s Office is in need of volunteers to represent defendants, who appear to be in military service, in Small Claims Court. The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) is a federal law that requires litigants in all non-criminal judicial and administrative proceedings to provide an affidavit stating whether or not a defendant is in military service before an order or judgment by default can be taken against them. The duties of appointed counsel are limited and do not require representation for the entire action. The WCBA will provide training for all volunteers and the cases are generally resolved in a timely fashion.  The training will be held on Tuesday, November 14 from 12-1 p.m. in the Wake County Courthouse, Old Jury Room 1113.  Lunch will be provided and this training is pending 1.0 general CLE credit. Please RSVP here if you are interested in volunteering for this excellent pro bono opportunity.
